Adam Weekly - Issue # 53
Hi, and welcome to an all new issue. Are your nerves as frazzled as mine are about SummerSlam tonight, and Edge's match against Matt Hardy?
First, I'll talk about the whole point of Edge's match on RAW this week. I've noticed that some people have wondered why a main eventer like Edge had a match against someone like Val Venis, who has been known as a Sunday Night Heat guy, or jobber, for the last couple of years. Honestly, it didn't surprise me one bit to find out who Edge's opponent was this past week. The only thing that did surprise me was that this match didn't happen a couple of weeks earlier. The way I saw it, after Hardy's comments, and even before that, after Kane's tombstone on Lita, I figured we would see Edge in a match against someone like Val or Val himself, the sole reason getting his aggressions out. I personally feel this match happened a little late, but I knew it was inevitable. As expected, it wasn't anything special, but we got to see Edge in the ring, and the interaction between him and Lita was especially cute. I also enjoyed how animated she was on the outside in his corner, taunting Venis when her man had the upper hand and how she kept applauding and clapping for Edge. The kiss after the match ended was absolutely adorable.
Also this week, we got to see all three parties in this triangle on Byte This! Edge and Lita were via satellite while Matt was in the studio with Todd Grisham. I wasn't surprised that Lita was so quiet. She seemed uncomfortable in this situation, and seeing as she is such a very private person, who could blame her? Edge, of course, has always also been very private where his personal life is concerned, but he had to have his say, so I wasn't surprised he spoke as much as he did. He definitely seemed to one-up Hardy each and every time, a good example being when he said that it speaks volumes that Matt has only had one serious relationship by the time he was thirty. Touche. I also think that this telecast proved beyond a shadow of a doubt which one of these two guys is the more mature. In case anyone missed it, Matt made faces, gestures and stupid noises while Edge was talking, and this was most noticeable toward the end of the show. Edge's final say was one of the best lines ever, and a great way to finish before he and Lita walked off - "SummerSlam - it's time to nut up, or shut the fuck up." All I have to say is BRAVO!
Okay, I'm going to end this here, but naturally, I'll also give my SummerSlam predictions, and I won't skimp on Edge's match. Last year, I had most of the predictions for this pay-per-view right, but let's see how I do this year.
Orlando Jordan Vs Chris Benoit (U.S. Title Match): I don't really have much to say about this one, except that I think Orlando's time with the U.S. belt is up. He's facing the Rabid Wolverine, perhaps THE best wrestler in the entire company. I am definitely picking Benoit to win this, and to walk out with the title.
Eugene Vs Kurt Angle (For the Gold Medal): I like both of these guys a lot, and while I would love to see Eugene retain and keep the medals so Kurt can continue being a crybaby, I don't see that happening. Since it's a no time limit this time, instead of having a three-minute limit, I see Kurt getting the victory, possibly via his Ankle Lock. I can't see Eugene holding onto those medals any longer, especially since Angle is the Olympian.
Undertaker Vs Randy Orton: I think Orton is going to be in for the fight of his life. However, I also think he's going to get the better of Taker since their match at WrestleMania 21. He's swift and crafty, and I see an RKO coming. I'm thinking that possibly there might be a spot where the referee gets knocked out, but I definitely see Randy winning this time around.
Shawn Michaels Vs Hulk Hogan: For the last two or three weeks, I've been saying I think Bret Hart is going to return to either be announced as the special referee for this match, or else just appear toward the end. Wrestling news sites have been contradicting this theory, but I'm not one to follow what they say. I'm unsure, however. In any case, after all the taunting HBK has done lately, and knowing who his opponent is, I believe Hogan will win.
Eddy Guerrero Vs Rey Mysterio (Ladder Match and Winner gets custody of Dominic): This is one match where I'm completely stuck. Before this past Thursday's SmackDown, when it was announced to be a ladder match, I was 100% certain Eddy would finally beat Rey. But now, with a ladder thrown in, that changes the entire ballgame. It can go either way, but at the same time, even if Rey wins, I don't see this feud ending just like that. I am going to go out on a limb and still pick Eddy.
Chris Jericho Vs John Cena (WWE Title Match): Easy prediction here. Jericho, although he's seemed to get a push lately, has seemed at the same time to get a serious DE-push. Over the past month or more, he's made Cena's life miserable in injuring him, outwitting him (as in the Battle of the Bands thing), teaming up with Carlito and even Eric Bischoff to screw him over, being an unfair special referee in matches, and much more. Something's gotta give, and I think it'll be John giving Y2J an FU and retaining the gold.
JBL Vs Batista (Anything Goes World Heavyweight Title Match): For some reason, I have memories of JBL's match from last year's SummerSlam. That one wasn't an Anything Goes match, but anything did go at the end of it. I see Batista beating him senseless and making him pay for being such a bully and an overall pain in the ass. Is it any surprise I'm picking Batista to win and retain?
Edge (With Lita) Vs Matt Hardy: I saved this one for last. I fully expect this to be an all out brawl. Real emotions are involved, real hatred is involved, so I don't think we'll see many wrestling moves. I think there will be a few used sparingly, like a spear from Edge, a Twist of Fate from Hardy, but not a whole lot of others. I don't like the idea of Lita being at ringside for this one. There are two scenarios I would like to see - one being that Lita does get involved toward the end and make like she's had a change of heart and is going to help Hardy, but when he trusts her, she slaps him or kicks him where it should hurt (the referee temporarily incapacitated, of course) - and then, Edge gets the win. The other is Matt getting a clean victory (even if it would mean Edge would have to lose), celebrating in the ring by posing to the crowd, and then Vince McMahon's music hits, the Chairman swaggers down to the ring, snatches a microphone, looks Hardy straight in the eye and shouts, "You're fiiiiiiiired (again)!" However, I can totally see this match ending in a no-contest.
I also know that Diva Search winner Ashley is supposed to be there tonight, and I believe we'll finally see the TV return of Women's Champion Trish Stratus. I think Trish will "welcome" her.
That does it for this week's issue. Be sure to watch SummerSlam tonight (if you ordered it), and RAW tomorrow!
